Attending Interview
The Restaurant Interview
Recruiters will
occasionally ask you to attend an interview during lunch or
dinner. Although this makes for a more relaxed setting, you
should not lose sight of the fact that it is still an
interview, and you should conduct yourself
accordingly.
Throughout this
type of interview use the relaxing nature of the meeting as a
means of talking about yourself and how you are right for the
job.
There will inevitably be some small talk at the start of the
meeting, but let the interviewer bring up the matter of the job
interview, before you attempt to sell yourself.
And don't get too personal when
you are talking about yourself.
There are also some basic points of
etiquette that you should observe.
These are as follows:
- Remember your basic table
manners, like not putting your elbows on the table, and so
on.
- Unfold your napkin to
your lap before eating.
- Avoid ordering messy or
sloppy foods, finger foods like ribs, and extremely
large sandwiches. Avoid pasta with thick sauces, and French
fries.
- Order modestly. Don't go for
the most expensive items on the menu either.
- Steer clear of alcohol if
you can.
- When you need to use the
restroom, leave your napkin on your chair or the arm of
your chair.
- Don't talk with your mouth
full.
- Excuse yourself properly and
politely if you need to leave the table for any reason.
- Keep your cell phone
switched off.
- Unless your interviewer invites
you to address him/her informally, continue to speak to
them formally.
At the conclusion of your
interview, be sure to thank the recruiter for the meal and
their time. Give a firm handshake, and ask when you might
reasonably expect to hear from them. This demonstrates
confidence and a continued interest in the position you are
after. Send them a thank you note the same day. A basic
courtesy.
