Taking Charge Of Your Own Career

If you want to further your career through promotion then you must take charge of events yourself. The days are long gone when people were promoted because of their seniority or because of their loyalty to their employer. And you can no longer rely on your immediate boss to help push a promotion through either. You need to sort it yourself. You need to be able to take charge of your own career by thinking and working smarter, not harder, and creating your own opportunities.

  • Before you enter any career, either with an existing employer or a new one, research the industry or market to determine whether it is growing or stagnant. Opt for a career that suits your skills and personality as well one that provides scope for personal growth and advancement.

  • Skilled workers are always appreciated by employers, so ensure that your working skills are constantly updated to realize your full potential.

  • Embrace change and be amongst the first to take the initiative to acquire the new skills demanded of it. This demonstrates to an employer that you are adaptable and flexible. Technological developments often bring challenges and you must be able to handle them.

  • Organizations achieve progress by having productive leadership. Become a leader, and generate innovative and effective solutions that  bring success to you and your employer.

  • Your ability to produce good results will come about if you rise to a challenge. Challenges can be completely overcome if you are determined to resolve them, but success doesn’t come easily - you have to work for it. Employers reward people who take the initiative - remember this.

  • Don't be dependent on others. It is far better to make mistakes yourself initially (we learn from our mistakes) than to rely on others to help us out.

  • Always participate in work-related meetings and make a contribution to the discussions. Make  suggestions that will help resolve problems. Develop leadership qualities, and extend your help to colleagues whenever possible.

If you want your career to progress, you have to take charge of it.  Follow the tips above, and you will be well on your way.
