Job Interview Tip: Combating Nervousness

Attending a job interview can seem a bit like going to the dentist. People will often say that they were nervous at the start of the interview, but were quite relieved when it was over. These feelings are commonplace even amongst experienced professionals.

Good preparation is the key to success in any interview. So, if your pre- interview preparation is good, you will go before the hiring manager with confidence and with little reason to be nervous.

There are several things that need to be done before going into any job interview. Firstly you need to research the company - it's history, products and services.

Then think about how you could fit into their organisation, and consider the kind of questions you could be asked. If possible, approach a friend or someone experienced to help you run through a mock interview beforehand.

Prepare an honest resume. Emphasise your experiences and your skills, and details of your academic qualifications.

Take with you to your interview, your resume, pen and paper in a briefcase or a folder, and keep a handkerchief in your pocket, just in case it's needed.

The night before your interview ensure you get a good nights sleep so that you can be alert and fresh.

When you enter the interview room, think positively. Treat the experience as a learning curve - even if you do not get the job. It is quite normal to go through a number of job interviews before you are successful.

Do not allow any negative experience, from past interviews to depress you or reduce your morale. Keep your mind clear and focused on all the questions that you are being asked. Never bluff your way out of questions you are unsure of. Be honest.

Attending any interview, and doing well for that matter, is a sort of mind game.  Keep calm, focus on the job in hand, and you'll be fine.  Yes, you can do it.
