Avoid These Career Planning Mistakes

Sometimes,  career planning doesn't seem to go according to plan and it is easy to put the blame on your own bad luck. Rather than dwell on the negative side of things, however, a simple review of your career plan can help put you back on course. It is possible to turn a situation, around although many don't realise this.

All too often it is the lack of effective goal setting that is at the root of the problem. People either set themselves unrealistic, unachievable goals, or they just don't put enough effort into achieving them.

Also, it is possible to overlook mistakes that have been made, that hamper career progress, but which could be learned from.

We all know that formulating effective goals helps us achieve our desires. You may be setting goals, but are they truly realistic, are you really focused on them?

Many people set goals which  they fail to achieve because they are far too generalized; they lack detail and substance. Unless your goals are specific, and have easily identifiable steps to success, you will probably end up frustrated.  Similarly, goals that are way too unrealistic and  which are very difficult to achieve, will also cause frustration and leave you feeling negative.

Peer pressure is another factor that can cause failure in a career plan. Pursuing a type of work mainly because friends work in the same area is a mistake. We all have our own strengths and weaknesses, knowledge and potential, but unless we have a degree of passion about the work we do, we are not going to make a career of it.

If you want a career with good prospects of advancement, you need to choose a field that offers a wide range of opportunity, not one that is in decline with little or no scope for personal advancement.

Finally, before you set any goal - and this applies to any part of your life, not just your career - you should be mindful of the effort required of you, to bring about success. Your goals should be specific, realistic and achievable in the time frame you set yourself. Write them down. Set target dates for each step necessary to achieve success, and then focus on achieving them

Career planning doesn't require superhuman intelligence, but it does take careful thought, research, focus and hard work.

If you want something to happen, you have to work at making it happen.
